My Story

Grandma's Gift

As a child, I loved sitting with my grandma Stokes as she sewed on her Singer treadle sewing machine. It seemed that she could sew anything. When I was in the seventh grade I asked my mom for a sewing machine, she gladly bought my first sewing machine. I took a home economics class in Jr high and made a red pair of pants and embroidered my initials on the back packet. In the late seventies designer jeans were coming on the scene and I thought why not make my own with my initials, like Gloria Vanderbilt?

Just Life

I continued to sew as a hobby throughout high school, college, and even into adulthood. I attended Oakland University in Rochester, MI. I graduated with a BS in Management Information Systems. Eastman Kodak Company recruited me and hired me as a Systems Analyst. I moved to Rochester, NY to start my career, at an amazing thriving company, in a city that I had never been to, knowing no one. In Rochester, I met and married my best friend, Michael Vaughn. The second-best decision of my life. We quickly began having children. We have five purpose-filled amazing children (Caleb, Shekinah, Zoe, Zachary & Samuel). After Caleb was born, I went part-time and after Shekinah was 9 months, I came home full-time to become, what I call a “House Queen.”

Hobby to Business

Having and raising five kids was the most amazing and hardest opportunity of my life. I wouldn’t change a minute of it. Matter of fact, now that they’re pretty much all grown, some days I dream of going back in time and reliving a few of those crazy, out-of-control days. Nonetheless, during those days, I still had my love for sewing. I’d make cute little outfits for the whole family.  People would often ask, “Where did you get that?” I’d answer, I made it. They’d then say, “Can you make me something?”  Then very organically, SV STYLE was born.

Motivation & Mission

As the children grew, so did more opportunities. We did fashion shows for the entire student body at their High School, then at their colleges, as well as my husband’s workplace. I began doing runway shows in the community and in other states. As well as having a growing clientele. I enjoy creating garments that express my uniqueness, as well as creating garments for people of all kinds, that inspire them to express their individual style.  The vision of SV STYLE is to bring an individual’s style to life.  This is embodied by my tagline “bringing style to life” and expressed through my mission statement: “Because the clothes you wear are your introduction to the world you’ll impact!

Others Minded

Having five kids, each with their own personality and style, afforded me a first-hand opportunity to see people for who God made them to be. I was able to help them become and express who they were, not who I wanted them to be. It was my privilege to guide my kids in the discovery of their own gifts, talents, and styles. I didn’t always do it perfectly but we got the job done. Because I believe that everyone is uniquely designed by God with individual gifts, talents, and style. It is foundational to SV Style not to just bring my style to life but to help others discover and pursue their passions, and bring their style to life! I also believe each one can reach one. So, in 2014 I established the SV Style Excellence Scholarship, which for 8 years was awarded to a High School graduating African American girl pursuing higher education.

Enjoying the Journey

We don’t get to choose how and why we were created. However, it is our responsibility and honor to discover, develop, and share the wonderful creation that we are with the world. My ultimate desire is to leave a legacy for my children and my children’s children, to love God, love yourself and others. We only have one life to live and there is only one you, so Live out loud! Be, share, and serve this planet with the gift of “you!”

My husband (Honey) & I, along with our youngest son Samuel and our dog JoeJoe reside in Midlothian, TX.  I’m so happy to be in the great state of Texas, bringing style to life.
